Stephen Fry & James Norton amongst stars to perform in semi-staged rehearsed reading of The Understudy next month

The Understudy

It has been announced that Henry Filloux-Bennett’s radio play The Understudy will receive a semi-staged rehearsed reading at the Palace Theatre in December.

Brought to the West End stage by Lawrence Batley Theatre Huddersfield and directed by David Nicholls, this “ultimate underdog story” tells the story of Stephen McQueen as he waits for his time to shine in his dream West End role. As he waits in the wings as the understudy to film star (and 12th sexiest man in the world) Josh Harper, he reflects on his career from non-speaking television roles to low budget tours. Outside of his career, which he hopes is about to hit dizzying heights, his personal life is falling apart with his wife leaving him, his daughter questioning his career choices and the fact that he fears he is developing feelings for another man’s wife. Can he make the decision between stealing the spotlight or stealing another man’s wife?

The production, which will play on 7 & 8 December 2020, boasts an all-star cast including Natalie Casey, James Norton, Mina Anwar, Stephen Fry, Marie Lawrence, James McNicholas, Sasha Frost and Lizzie Muncey.

Proceeds from the play will be split between Acting For Others, The Equity Charitable Trust and The Theatre Development Trust, run by the Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre.
