Fringe review: ALEX KEALY - THE FEAR, Monkey Barrel Comedy

Alex Kealy: The Fear is a stand-up comedy show that dives headfirst into the anxieties of life—and somehow, it works brilliantly. From the moment Kealy steps on stage, he strips away any gimmicks, delivering a performance that is raw, honest, and packed with sharp humour. It’s just Alex, the microphone, and the truth, served up with a side of gags drawn from his own experiences.

Kealy is newly married, good at maths, and, like many of us, he fears death and grapples with a range of anxieties. These fears form the backbone of his set, presented through a series of thoughtful anecdotes and stories that reveal as much about him as they do about the human condition. One of the standout confessions is that Kealy has three major fears, one of which is the very audience he’s performing for. It’s an unconventional way to confront fear, almost like admitting to a monster that you’re terrified of it—but it’s this kind of candidness that makes Kealy’s comedy so refreshing.

His honesty is surprising, but it’s also what makes his humour so relatable. Kealy quickly establishes a confessional rapport with the audience, delivering jokes that stem from a place of genuine vulnerability. He’s acutely aware of his craft, often commenting on his own efforts to make eye contact or his attempts to tackle controversial topics. This self-awareness, combined with his seamless transitions from one subject to another, keeps the audience engaged and connected, no matter how broad the spectrum of his material.

One of the most amusing parts of the show comes when Kealy discusses his recent marriage and the fact that he and his wife don’t share a bed. His take on engagements and marriage is both funny and insightful, offering a fresh perspective on the complexities of relationships. It’s in these moments that Kealy’s talent for blending humour with heartfelt observation really shines.

The hour flies by in a blur of laughter, with Kealy keeping the pace brisk and the mood light. By the end of the show, he skilfully ties together all the loose threads, delivering a conclusion that is as clever as it is satisfying. Alex Kealy: The Fear is a fast-paced, deeply enjoyable comedy experience that turns the everyday anxieties of life into something genuinely entertaining.
