English National Opera announces 2022/23 season

The Opera House for Everyone, English National Opera, have announced they will be performing nine operas in their 2022/23 season, including seven exciting new productions and two much-loved revivals.

As part of the exceptional new season, ENO will present the UK premiere of It’s A Wonderful Life; an operatic version of the much-loved 1946 film penned by Jake Heggie, and starring Danielle De Niese in her ENO operatic debut. The libretto, written by Gene Scheer, tells the recognisable story of George Bailey’s life crisis and redemption. It is based on an original text,  a short story called ‘The Greatest Gift’ by Philip Van Doren Stern. Since it premiered in Houston back in 2016, it has become a staple at many American opera houses during the holiday season for its retelling of a beloved classic and for its emotional and gorgeous score. We’re delighted that UK audiences will be able to see it for themselves here from 25 November-10 December.

Other programme highlights include Jeanine Tesori’s contemporary opera Blue. Tinuke Craig (Jitney) will direct this piece about police violence against African American communities. Revivals include Calixto Bieito’s Carmen and ENO will have their first ever production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard, overseen by Jo Davies.

There will be three relaxed performances available in the 2022/23 season. These are designed to be more accessible for adults and children who may benefit from a more relaxed environment when they come to the theatre. These will take place on 12 November (The Yeomen of the Guard), 7 December (It’s A Wonderful Life) and 4 April 2023 (Akhnaten)

ENO has a commitment that opera is for everyone and so have continued to start opera tickets from just £10 (plus £2.25 booking fee). They also have a fantastic range of ways to save, including Under 21s come free and their Under 35s discount opera tickets scheme. Find out about those here
