David Morrissey to star in new Headlong play accessed by phone
As part of nationwide theatre project Signal Fires, Headlong has announced a new short play, designed to be experienced over the phone.
Performed by David Morrissey, Leanne Best and Jamal Ajala, The Ghost Caller explores ideas of grief and loss in 2020 and will be available from 5-12 November.
Headlong were originally meant to present six new pieces of work at Liverpool’s St Luke’s Bombed Out Church but local restrictions have meant that plans had to be revised.
The venue still has a role in the proceedings however, as a telephone number will be projected onto the side of the building between the above dates, along with being published online so it can be accessed countrywide. By texting the number, audiences will be called back by a ghost character voiced by Morrissey. The listener then becomes the play’s protagonist.
Director Holly Race Roughan said: "The Ghost Caller was born out of our desire and determination to continue to bring theatrical experiences to our Liverpool audiences despite the increased government restrictions.
"As the pandemic continues and the nights get longer, theatre is constantly having to adapt and embrace new ways of working in order to weather these challenging times and reach our audiences. With such an astonishing cast we hope this will lift spirits – as well as summon them – until we can return next, in person."
