Director Danny Boyle, known for such works as Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, and the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, is recreating The Matrix (1999) for large-scale immersive stage performance in October and November 2023.

Boyle will work with designer Es Devlin, choreographer Kenrick "H2O" Sandy, composer Michael "Mikey J" Asante and writer Sabrina Mahfouz to produce a distinctive collaboration of cutting-edge dance, music and visual effects.

This newly announced venture, titled Free Your Mind, will be staged in the opening line-up of the new, ambitious 7,000-capacity Manchester's Factory arts venue.

The Factory, now rechristened Factory International, was conceived in 2014 by then-Chancellor George Osborne and, after facing delays and rising budgets, will now open in summer 2023 with a lot to prove.

The venue will provide a permanent home for the Manchester International Festival, said to attract 850,000 people a year to the city.
