The National Theatre has appointed Clint Dyer as its new Deputy Artistic Director, it has been announced today.

Appointed as an Associate of the National Theatre in October, he has now joined the NT’s senior leadership team and will work alongside Director and Joint Chief Executive Rufus Norris and Head of New Work Emily McLaughlin, to oversee the theatre’s creative output. 

The writer and Director has been described by Norris as a “remarkable artist”, going on to say that the appointment was representative of a trend at the National Theatre, which is now working with more theatre makers than at any point in the theatre’s history. 

During his career, he is the only black British artist to have worked on full-scale National Theatre productions as an actor, writer, and Director. 

His production Death of England: Delroy, a collaboration with playwright Roy Williams, reopened the NT’s Olivier Theatre after the first lockdown.  Dyer is currently working on directing the forthcoming musical Get up! Stand Up!, celebrating Bob Marley’s life.

The role of Deputy Artistic Director has been vacant since Ben Power departed from the role in 2019.
