Casting announced for Oliver Goldsmith’s SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER at Orange Tree Theatre

The Orange Tree Theatre has announced full casting for Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer, which plays at the venue from 18 November 2023 - 6 January 2024.

Artistic Director Tom Littler will direct Freddie Fox (The Great, House of the Dragon) and Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education, A Mirror) as Charles Marlow and Kate Hardcastle, with David Horovitch (Miss Marple, Mr Turner) and Greta Scacchi (Heat and Dust, Ware and Peace) as Mr and Mrs Hardcastle, alongside Sabrina Bartlett (Bridgerton) as Constance, Richard Derrington (The Tempest) as Diggory, Guy Hughes (Cyrano) as Tony, and Robert Mountford (Spike) as Hastings in this celebration of chaos and courtship.

Christmas at Hardcastle Hall. Mr and Mrs Hardcastle have rather different ideas of the perfect Christmas. She craves cool jazz and cocktails; he wants a warm fire and the company of his bookish daughter Kate. Kate Hardcastle can't wait to meet her intended fiancé, Charles Marlow. But when Marlow is stricken with nerves, Kate must act fast.

Meanwhile, confusion reigns. Kate's friend Constance is trying to steal her own diamonds to run off to France with her dim-witted beau, Hastings. Tony Lumpkin has tricked the visitors into believing that Hardcastle Hall is a pub. And Diggory is rapidly proving to be the worst butler in the world.

Artistic Director Tom Littler said: “We are delighted to welcome such a tremendous company for Oliver Goldsmith’s heartwarming and hilarious play. Two hundred and fifty years since it premiered, it remains one of the liveliest, sharpest, and most generous plays in the canon. She Stoops to Conquer brought laughter back into the 18th century theatre, but it also introduced a new level of acute psychology and paved the way for Oscar Wilde, Noel Coward and more.”

The production has set and costume design by Neil Irish and Anett Black, with lighting by Jonathan Chan, music and sound by Tom Attwood, and movement by Julia Cave.
