CR8TRACT Theatre have announced full casting for the upcoming revival of Godspell at the Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre in Walthamstow, running from 25 September-10 October.
With music by Stephen Schwartz and based on an original concept by John-Michael Tebelak, the rock gospel musical will feature Alex White (Adeline; Peter Pandemic) as Jesus, Josh Hanley (Eastenders/Betty Blue Eyes) as John the Baptist/Judas, Eleanor Walsh (Titanic, Aspects of Love), Martine J. Berg (Hot Mess), Reece McKenzie (Hair), Kimberley Ensor (Mamma Mia), Daniel Noah (Naked Boys Singing, Imagine This), Joe Churms (Sweet Charity), Laura Hyde (Bark, Twelfth Night) and Naomi Cowe (Love’s Labour’s Lost, Play On).
This revival will be directed and choreographed by Brendan Matthew, with musical direction by Benjamin Levy, associate direction and choreography by Ashen Gupta and Laura Hyde, lighting by Matthew Swithinbank, and sound by Daniel Mawson.
Matthew said: “This production will place the passion of the Christ firmly in today’s generation using the rock and pop world as the backdrop for this timeless tale. Godspell is all about a community learning to find its voice and, using the messages of love, forgiveness and hope taught by Jesus and translating these stories through contemporary pop culture, they find a way to move forward into a newly rebuilt society. We are thrilled to have found a group of exceptionally talented funny actors and musicians with some incredibly stunning singing voices to really tell that story. The messages laid out in the beginning by John-Michael Tebelak are so poignant at the moment and so we aim to keep those in our hearts as we present this phenomenal show.”
