Book review: DEATH ON THE PIER, Jamie West

‘A murder mystery playwright turns real-life detective when, during one of his plays, an actress is shot and killed, while an unsuspecting audience watches on.’

This debut novel from Jamie West is set in The Palace Pier Theatre, Brighton in the 1930’s. West cleverly sets the scene by giving good detail to the old style of theatre and throughout, it is evident that West is well-experienced in working backstage at theatres. Taking a new approach and having the playwright solve the mystery gives good opportunity to educate the reader on theatre customs and production.

West has sensitively incorporated some themes of LGBTQ+ throughout the book, despite being set in the 1930’s, which gives the story depth and allows the reader to develop empathy towards these characters.

West gives good detail to each of the characters. The protagonist, Bertie Carroll, is a likeable character but is unconfident in his abilities to solve the mystery – so you find yourself rooting for him and it is a nice development throughout the story, seeing him piece the clues together and solving the mystery. He works alongside his detective friend Hugh Chapman throughout the book and the narration works well in delving more into their relationship. The rest of the characters, who are cast members of the play being set at the theatre, all have good narration throughout the story. This positively contributes to good character development.

West’s writing style is simple yet effective. His story is easy to read and due to the quick pace of the story, you find yourself wanting to read on. West cleverly grips the audience with many twists and turns, and as a reader, you are consistently second guessing yourself as to who the culprit could be.

It is thrilling to know that this story will be part of a series. West has avoided filling to much of a backstory and Bertie’s relationship with Hugh. This will give great opportunity for the main character’s story and his relationships to be explored further.

A gripping, fun and fast paced murder mystery.
