Birmingham Rep’s highly acclaimed production of The Play That I Wrote will be streamed on demand via the theatre’s website from today (15 March) until noon on Monday 4 April.

The play, which has been delighting audiences across the UK on its tour, will star special celebrity guest star Tom Hiddleston, and was recorded at Theatre Royal Bath as part of its tour.

The play, directed by Sean Foley, started at Birmingham Rep Theatre in December 2021 where Hiddleston made his first appearance. It has since visited Shrewbury, Manchester, Chichester and Cambridge to name but a few, with an array of well-known celebrity guest stars including Charles Dance, Adrian Lester, Keith Allen, Kara Tointon, Tamzin Outhwaite, Craig Parkinson, Gary Lucy, Sue Holderness, Annette Badland and Denise Welch.

The play follows Thom who has written an epic play set in the French Revolution, Dennis on the other hand wants to continue their double act and believes thy could be the next Morecambe and Wise. In order to restore Thom’s confidence and secure the future of their double act Dennis must persuade a guest star to perform in the play Thom wrote.

Director of The Play that I Wrote  and Artistic Director of the Rep Sean Foley said: “Our 20th Anniversary Production of The Play What I Wrote has brought laughter to audiences as part of its UK tour since playing at The Rep at Christmas. Now, we are thrilled to announce this opportunity for audiences everywhere to see this Olivier Award winning homage to Morecambe and Wise in their own homes. It was a thrill to capture the joy this show brings for the BBC, and now to stream a Rep production on demand for the very first time.”

Proceeds raised from the streaming of the show will go directly towards supporting The Rep in its ongoing work as Birmingham’s only producing theatre. The stream is available now here for £10, with audience members given the option to add a donation to kindly reflect the amount of people viewing the stream.

The production will be broadcast on the BBC later in the year.
