Birmingham Rep & Birmingham Royal Ballet join forces to present new dance work

In a brand new collaboration, Birmingham Rep and Birmingham Royal Ballet will be joining forces to present a series of new dance work later this year.

Three pieces will be presented in medley form, with music by Royal Ballet Sinfonia, to 150 live audience members per performance in Birmingham from 22-24 October, before playing at Sadler’s Wells from 29-31 October. The show will then be streamed in November to a paying online audience.

The first piece is Will Tuckett’s one-act ballet, Lazuli Sky, which is inspired by social distancing. It was commissioned by BRB’s Director Carlos Acosta in March and James Simpson has created an “augmented reality experience” to run alongside the show.

The production will feature music by John Adams and stars Damen Axtens, Ryan Felix, Haoliang Feng, Tori Forsyth-Hecken, Kit Holder, Yu Kurihara, Gus Payne, Rachele Pizzillo, Emma Price, Tom Rogers, Eilis Small and Yuki Sugiura.

The second piece will see ten BRB dancers performing Our Waltzes by Vicente Nebrada, with music by Teresa Carreño, Salvador Llamozas, Manuel Guadalajara, Isabel de Maury, Sofia Limonta, Ramon Delgado Palacios and Heraclio Fernández.

Lastly, Valery Panov’s solo show Liebestod will feature Wagner’s music for Tristan and Isolde.

Carlos Acosta, director of Birmingham Royal Ballet, says: "After joining Birmingham Royal Ballet at the beginning of the year, I set about making new friends in the city, knowing that collaboration was key to a successful and creative art form. Sean Foley, also new to the job of Artistic Director of The Rep, and I spoke about an exciting cross-sector partnership, using the best of our creative networks in theatre and in dance to develop new work. It became clear that we shared a vision and commitment to making Birmingham the greatest city in the Arts.

Birmingham Rep and Birmingham Royal Ballet have also announced the premiere of one-act abstract ballet, City of a Thousand Trades, in May 2021, which will explore the diversity and industrial heritage of Birmingham.
