Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella played its final West End performance yesterday (12 June), with the composer saying in a letter read out at the curtain call that mounting the show during the pandemic was a “costly mistake.”

Director Laurence Connor read out the message from Lloyd Webber, who was not in attendance, at the end of the show which also stated that his show would have undoubtedly enjoyed a longer run under different circumstances.

Whilst much praise was given, the letter received a negative reaction from audience members with boos heard in the auditorium but Connor did jump to Lloyd Webber’s defence, saying how easy it is to find a villain in such a situation.

Lloyd Webber and the producers were heavily criticised last month for failing to inform the actors of the show’s closure ahead of the news breaking.

The musical is due to open on Broadway next year.
