Christmas is all about heading to the theatre with our loved ones to enjoy a traditional pantomime, a modernistic twist on a classic or to enjoy a classic Christmas tale.

So if you’re looking for a fix of something traditional in the way of a tale, you’ll be delighted to hear the breaking news from The Old Vic, who have announced today that they will live stream Jack Thorne’s critically-acclaimed adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless classic, A Christmas Carol, this winter.

The show will be staged as a full-stage production, performing to an empty auditorium as part of the theatre’s Old Vic: In Camera series. The opportunity to watch this show is limited with only 16 performances available to stream into your home.

The Old Vic’s Artistic Director Matthew Warchus has praised how the theatre community has “rallied around to support the Old Vic, and theatre in general, at this time of serious jeopardy”.

Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey is set in Victorian England, where the class divide is so dominant in society. Our protagonist, Scrooge is a cold-hearted miser who despises Christmas. On Christmas Eve, he is visited by three ghosts who will guide him to redemption and to becoming a far better person in society.

Matthew Warchus is “excited to tell the story in this new format, with the powerful addition of close-ups” and hopefully this production will be a desirable alternative to their Christmas show plans this winter.

80,000 tickets will be available for the run, with all of the ticket-holders who had planned to see the live show guaranteed the opportunity to watch the live-stream. Tickets will go on sale in November and are priced between £10-65.
