2023 summer season announced for Shakespeare’s Globe

Shakespeare’s Globe have announced their new season, running from April to October.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream opens the season on 27 April, with the venue’s artistic director Michelle Terry taking to the stage as Puck. The production runs until 12 August, This will be followed by The Comedy of Errors, directed by Sean Holmes, opening on 12 May and running through to 29 July.

Ellen McDougall returns to the Globe to direct As You Like It, which runs from 18 August-29 October, whilst family friendly show Midsummer Mechanicals returns to the Playhouse from 22 July-26 August.

Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank, the Globe’s flagship project for secondary schools, also returns with a new production of The Tempest, directed by Diane Page running 18 March-15 April.  A special night of new writing entitled Burnt at the Stake, or The Whole Truth will take place on 13 October.

Artistic Director Michelle Terry said: “2023 is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s First Folio. Without this collection, 18 of Shakespeare’s plays would have been lost forever including four well known and beloved plays: The Tempest, Comedy of Errors, As You Like It and Macbeth. At a time when we all stand to lose and gain so much, at a time in which we all face huge questions about who, what, and why we are, theatre remains one of the greatest and safest ways for a society to debate with itself and ask these questions. This summer, with those four folio plays, along with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we hope to surprise, challenge, excite, illuminate, provoke, and delight, as we continue to put Shakespeare to work for now and for our future on this incredible Globe.
